     Weight Management

If you would like to discuss losing weight please come in and talk to one of our nurses. They will be able to go through your diet and eating habits to come up with a plan to help you lose weight. They often also have access to vouchers for organisations like slimming world or weight watchers. There are also sometimes vouchers for the local gyms.

We know that it can be very difficult to motivate yourself to lose weight. There are not only so many diets but there are also some companies who will try to promise you weight reductions which are not medically possible.

The structure of the nurses advice will centre around the fact that everyone has a set genetic metabolic rate. This is the minimum amount of energy your body needs on a daily basis. This is something that may slowly increase or decrease through age but you can not alter.

However you can make changes to the amount of energy you consume or the energy you burn. Thus to lose one pound a week you would have to either burn off or consume 500kcal less a day than normal. Therefore:

1lb a week = 4lbs a month = 1 stone every 3 months!

The hitch is that this reduction has to be consistent, every day, it means no treats- nothing extra until you have achieved the weight loss you are aiming for. The reason behind this that any day over your calorie limit will get turned into fat.

The nurses will be able to look at how you can reduce calories from cutting out on snacks to decreasing portion size. They will also be able to advise you on which types of exercise help to loose weight. A rule of thumb is 30 minutes of exercise three times a week which raises your heart rate above 120 will burn calories.
