     Training

Church Street Practice is specially approved for the postgraduate training of doctors in General Practice, and also for teaching medical students.

Postgraduate Training

There is a long tradition of training within our practice. Qualified doctors who are training to be General Practitioners spend time at the practice before moving on to another surgery once they are fully qualified GPs. We are lucky to have have two superb trainers Dr Paul Bryan and Dr Cheryl Fairley.

The Practice is linked to the Oxford Deanery. More information is available on their website here.

Training has changed dramatically in the past few years, and now incorporates more experience within GP practices. You may now be seen by doctors at different stages of  their  GP training. These doctors used to be called registrars but are now known Specialty Trainees. They spend six or twelve months working here. All of these doctors are fully qualified, and also have supervision from one of the Partners in the practice. On occasions your consultation may be video recorded for teaching purposes. This will not be done without your consent. Please click here to see the current trainees in the practice.

Medical Students

We also have medical students training here. Medical students are attached to the practice via the Department of Primary Care at Oxford University, which you can find more information about here.

They each have a 5 week attachment with us in their 5th year of medical school. They are supervised by Dr Rickman Godlee but at the start of their attachment they may sit in with any of the staff. You will be advised if the doctor or nurse you are seeing has one with them. Once they have been with us for a week they see patients before one of our doctors. This is a vital part of their education and you will be helping them invaluably by agreeing to see them. After seeing the student you would then have a joint appointment with them and the GP. They are not allowed to prescribe medications.

We hugely value the role you play in helping us to educate the next generation of doctors, but we also recognise that sometimes you would rather not have a student present. If this is the case, please don't worry. Simply inform the receptionist if you would prefer to see the doctor or nurse alone.
