     Test Results

We understand when you have had an investigation, whether it be a blood test, x-ray or test at the hospital you maybe anxious to know the result. People often assume that if we do not contact you that everything is fine. For abnormal results this is most likely the case, however if we were to never receive a result we may not know that it has not come back. This is because we send hundreds of tests off each week. Therefore, if you are expecting a result we would appreciate you ringing to find out whether it was normal or not. The best time to ring is the afternoon as the phones are less busy. The time guide below will give you an idea of how long you will have to wait before we would expect a result back.
Routine Blood Tests (including Thyroid tests) 3 Days
Special Blood Tests (Immunology Tests, Hormonal Tests) 1-3 weeks
Microbiology Tests 1 week
X-ray 2 weeks
Hospital Investigations 2-4 weeks

For blood  and microbiology tests the doctors comment on the results and have instructed reception to pass onto you their comment. If you have further questions then please book a telephone appointment. If you have blood tests taken at hospital we usually are not sent these but if required can find them out for you if you can not speak to your specialist.

If there is an acute problem with an x-ray we usually get a fax from the reporting radiologist and your Doctor will contact you. If there is not an acute problem we generally get the results 2 weeks after you have the x-ray. When you ring for a result the Receptionist will usually book you a telephone appointment with the Doctor. This may not be on the same day if you wish to speak to your usual doctor. If it is just the result you would like then the Duty doctor will call you back.

Hospital Investigation results can take a long time to come back to use as they are posted through to us once they have been typed up. If you are concerned about the wait and can not speak to your specialist we can sometimes get hold of a result on your behalf.
