     Cervical Smears

Smear testing is offered in the practice by our nursing team, although GPs are also able to perform them.

An appointment will automatically be sent to you by the practice for your routine smear although they can be done at any time if clinically indicated.

Screening begins at the age of 25 and runs every 3 years, until the age of 50. After this smears are every 5 years, until the age of 65. There are various reasons why screening only starts at the age of 25. If you are under 25 and have symptoms you are concerned about please see one of our doctors who will discuss them with you and if appropriate carry out an examination.

It is an important tool in detecting early changes that can eventually lead to cervical cancer. By detecting them early treatment can be offered. If you do not wish to have smears then you need to inform us so that we can enter your decision in your clinical notes.
